What Is a Face Rating? How the 0-100 Score Is Calculated

A face rating is a 0-100 measurement of facial symmetry and proportion consistency. Here is what goes into the score, how it is calibrated, and what it does not mean.

A face rating is a number that summarises how consistent your facial geometry is. That is the whole claim. It measures whether your features line up with published proportion conventions and with each other — not whether you are attractive.

What a face rating actually measures

Every face rating starts from the same 478-landmark mapping of your photo. From that mapping, FaceRating derives a set of measurements:

  • Facial symmetry — how closely your left and right halves mirror each other, landmark by landmark. This is the single largest input into the score.
  • Facial thirds — where your hairline, nose and chin fall against three equal bands.
  • Golden ratio — how closely your proportions track the constant phi (1.618).
  • Facial fifths — the width of the face divided into five equal columns, checked against your eye and mouth positions.
  • Eye spacing — the distance between your eye centres relative to your face width.
  • Jaw taper — the width of your jaw measured against your cheekbones.

How the score is calibrated

Each measurement is compared against a reference range drawn from published proportion work, not against an average face or a beauty scale. A measurement inside the band scores high; a measurement outside it scores low. Those regional scores are then combined into the 0-100 face rating.

This matters for how you read the number. A face can score very high on symmetry and poorly on facial thirds, and the region breakdown will show it. The overall rating is a summary, not a verdict — which is exactly why the free scan shows you all six dimensions rather than one number.

What a face rating does not mean

A high face rating does not mean you are good looking. It means your facial geometry is proportionally consistent and symmetric against the reference bands. Two people with identical scores can look nothing alike.

It is also not a measure of health, character or age. The analysis is geometry only, and it is presented as educational and entertainment content.

What moves the number

Because the score is a measurement of geometry, it responds to the conditions of the photo:

  • Lighting — uneven or harsh light shifts the landmark positions the model reads.
  • Camera angle — a tilted or off-axis photo changes apparent proportions.
  • Lens distortion — wide-angle phone lenses stretch the edges of the frame, which distorts the outer thirds of a face.
  • Expression — a wide-open mouth or squinted eyes changes several landmarks at once.

Take one clear, front-facing photo in even light and keep the whole face in frame. The same photo scored twice will not return exactly the same number; treat a point or two of movement as noise.

Face rating vs. the full Face Report

The free face rating gives you the headline score, your face shape, and a summary. The Full Face Report adds all 40+ underlying measurements, the seven regional scores, a styling concept generated on your own photo, and a ranked four-week plan.

You can run the free face rating in about ten seconds, with no account and no card. Photos from free scans are deleted within two hours.
